An existing single-story restaurant, situated on a very tight 20’ wide site, was transformed into this two-story office building. The adjacent building is a new five-story speculative ‘prairie’ style red brick structure, thus the owner specifically requested a ‘prairie’ building as well, but one that would clearly be unique. The solution was to create a building that read as a cohesive singular mass, yet belied its narrow site. This was achieved by setting in the second floor corners to give the roof an overhang, which otherwise would not have been possible. The detailing of the facade is understated, yet finely scaled, creating a ‘jewel box’ structure.
